February 2009: Launch of the Khuphuka Project

On
February 7th the Khuphuka Project was formally launched in the
community of uMqatsheni. Amongst the singing, dancing and prayers,
there was significant representation from all sections of the local
community to endorse this new project. Speakers at the event included
Mr. Mdu Banda, mayor of the Kwa Sani Municipality who warmly welcomed
the beginnings of the project in a forgotten community facing many
barriers to development.
It is very positive and encouraging that the Khuphuka Project has the support of the local authorities, tribal committee, community leaders, traditional healers and the people of uMqatsheni. The launch got extensive coverage in the broadsheet ‘Witness’.

March 2009: Recruitment and Training of Staff

After
a busy week of recruitment, the Khuphuka Project has identified their
team to begin work on the ground in mid April 2009. All of the staff
has been sourced from the local community.
Nine part-time community care workers have been selected to work with households in the different communities of uMqatsheni and the full-time Community Care Co-ordinator Ms. Nomkhosi Majozi will oversee their activities. The youth worker Mr. Skhumbuzo Milbeni has already two years experience in working with young people in the area and the paralegal worker Ms. Nokabonga Majozi has experience of assisting the people of her community in accessing their entitlements.
We believe we have recruited a strong, dynamic team that can make a difference to the communities and are excited as we now enter into intensive one month training. Sincere thanks to the team at the Woza Moya Project for their invaluable help during the recruitment process.

Fundraising Update

Site of the future Khuphuka Project Community Centre
Heartfelt thanks to the San Francisco Insight Meditation Centre for their amazing and inspiring fundraising events in January of this year which has raised an initial fund of $12,000 towards the building of the centre and to the Mandala Trust in the UK who have given 10,000 SA Rand to build a childrens playground at the centre. Donations are also beginning to come in from a number of private donors to whom we are extremely grateful.
It is estimated that the centre will cost in the region of $100,000 and we would like to start building in 2009. If you feel you can help in any way or are interested in organizing an event in your area then please contact us.
