It takes a village to raise a child

Slindile Ntshalintshali - Child Support Worker

Due to the huge prevelance of orphaned and vulnerable children in our area of operation, and as a result of our needs assessment 2009, we have launched a child support service in response to these needs.  Our Child support service is co-ordinated by Slindile Ntshalintshali and aims to develop a service centred around child protection and empowerment and dedicated to childrens' rights.

The Khuphuka CCWs have received training in child care and identify vulnerable children within their areas.  The children are then referred to Slindile who visits the child and makes a thorough assesment.  The child is then referred to a specialist within Khuphuka if appropriate, or to an outside government agency or NGO if required.

Slindile has close links with the local social worker and the department of Social development and builds strong links with a variety of organisations concerned with the welfare of children.  The Khuphuka Project is currently partnering with the National association of Child care workers on a mentor programme which involves our Community care workers identifying and supporting child headed families.  We hope the relationship with the NACCW will help the child support service to build capacity and improve networking opportunities.

Clowns Without Borders South Africa is currently applying for funding to deliver a range of psychosocial interventions to children and their carers in the uMqatsheni area in 2010 and 2011 which would be an excellent addition to our service.
