Khuphuka UK came into being following a Sanghaseva* work and meditation retreat at Dharmagiri Buddhist hermitage. During this retreat, the overseas participants worked alongside young people from the Mqatsheni community to launch the Khuphuka Project Food Garden – a programme which continues to create and sustain high yielding vegetable gardens for the most vulnerable households in the community.

A number of the participants from the UK were so affected by the experience that they decided to explore ways in which to help the project in the longer term.  London Insight Meditation** had also organised its first ‘walk for Khuphuka’ fundraising event in September 2009 which was a tremendous success.  This combined energy and enthusiasm led to Khuphuka UK being constituted as a trust in 2010. 

Khuphuka UK provides a forum and a channel for supporters and friends of Khuphuka in the UK and elsewhere overseas to support the vital work of the Khuphuka Project through fundraising, awareness raising and other initiatives.  There is a large and growing number of people who feel drawn to service work and Khuphuka UK aims to facilitate and develop a network of individuals dedicated to opening the heart,  through engaging in various activities in support of the communities served by Khuphuka in South Africa
